The University of Environment and Sustainable Development UESD community choir (UESD Choir), has been inaugurated. The UESD Choir, with an initial membership of sixteen (16), has now increased to sixty-two (62) within two years and comprises staff members and students.
The inauguration took place on the 1st of September, 2023 at the Auditorium of the University’s Multipurpose Building, at Somanya, in the Eastern Region. It was jointly performed by the Vice-Chancellor of UESD Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, and his counterpart from the University of Media, Arts and Communications (UniMAC) Prof. Kwamena Quansah Aidoo, who was the Special Guest.
Others who graced the event included the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof., Wiafe Debrah, the Registrar, Mrs Mary Abena Agyepong, and some Management members of UESD, as well as some queen mothers from Kroboland.
Also in attendance were the Somanya Methodist JHS Cultural Troop and Our Lady of Fatima School Choir. The UESD Choir and the guest choirs treated the audience to a rendition of choral, hymns, and contemporary tunes.
A special feature was the cutting of cake to commemorate the day.
The Registrar, Mrs Agyepong, echoed the significance of music as a universal language understood and appreciated by all. She said, that music by nature makes the heart healthy, stimulates memories and is therapeutic.
Dean of Students and Chairperson of the UESD Choir, Dr. Daniella Delali Sedegah, revealed that the formation of the choir was championed by Mr. Eric Smart Onumah, a Junior Assistant Registrar at the School of Sustainable Development with support from the Dean of the School, Prof. Anthony Amoah.
She was happy that the UESD Choir for the past two years has performed at the University’s programmes like Commencement Lectures, Matriculation and Thanks Giving Services as well as Investiture and Induction of the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar. Dr. Sedegah expressed appreciation to the Management for the immense support, guidance and good counsel being accorded the choir, and called for more support from the university, staff and the Somanya community. She was optimistic that the UESD Choir, is set for greater achievements within Somanya and beyond, and invited new members to join.
The Special Guest, Prof. Aidoo, commended the choristers for the splendid performance they put up and urged them not to relent on their oars.
The Chairman of the event, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, applauded the choristers for their resilience and expressed joy at the feat they have chalked up.
He told the choristers to be mindful that in performing, they answer to a higher calling of ensuring that through music, weak hearts will be made healthy, memories will be well-stimulated, and pain will be properly managed in order to enhance the good life and wellbeing of humankind.
The UESD Choir has five (5) directors: Mr. Godfred Akuffo, Mr. Ransford Lartey, Mr. Nunu Yaw Akoto, Ken Darkwahene Asumeng and Mr. Benjamin Atta Frimpong (a student).
It has a five member-executive made up of; Dr. Daniella Delali Sedegah; Vice Chairman, Mr. Daniel Ofori Mintah; Secretary, Ms. Joyce Asantewah Yeboah; Organizer, Mr. Eric Smart Onumah; Treasurer, Mr. Raymond Seth Kojo Akusackey; Internal Director, Mr. Ransford Lartey, and Curator, Ms. Eunice Boaben.
