The University of Environment and Sustainable Development has played glowing tribute to Dr. Christine Amoako-Nuamah, former Minister of State for her significant contributions to its establishment under UESD Act, 2015(Act 898).
As Chairperson of the Committee that established UESD, Dr. Amoako-Nuamah played a pivotal role in starting the University. At a meeting in Accra with a delegation from UESD, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson told her that, ‘’the seed she and her team sowed’’ has blossomed with the University’s first cohort of students set to graduate in November.
The meeting aimed to update Dr. Amoako-Nuamah on the University’s progress, report on achievements and invite her to the ceremony graduation. Prof. Nyarko-Sampson acknowledged her immense contribution to the UESD’s setup and briefed her on the University’s programmes and activities. He said, some of the programmes have been readjusted to meet contemporary needs. He highlighted the Core values of the University-Honesty, Opportunity, Perseverance and Enterprising (HOPE), converted into a Roadshow to inculcate this value among staff members and students alike.
The University maintains a healthy relationship with its communities, participating in their programmes likewise the communities. Through its Community Engagement and Project Innovations Unit (CEPIU), students entering level 300 go to live in the communities under the Community-Based Experiential Learning (CoBEL)programme profiling and learning from them.
The Vice-Chancellor noted UESD’s efforts to increase visibility, including visits to Senior High Schools in the vicinity. The University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with more than forty International and local organisations for knowledge sharing, student internship exchange programmes and data sharing.
The Registrar, Mrs Mary Abena Agyepong also commended Dr. Amoako-Nuamah for the role in establishing the University. She said, the meeting was also to tap on the knowledge and experience she has built over the years The Director of Physical Development and Estate Management (DPDEM), Sur. Isaac Abbam, also touched on issues regarding the land dimension and compensation.
Dr. Amoako-Nuamah, thanked the team for recognising her contributions. Acknowledging the teamwork involved, she praised her other colleagues including, Prof. George Benneh, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon for his significant role in the committee. She expressed delight in UESD’s strides and commended Management for promoting the core values among staff members and students.
