The Management of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), has been advised to stick to its core mandate of providing high-quality education in Ghana by a distinguished statesman and former minister of state, Hon. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang. Additionally, he has praised the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, for his exemplary leadership in directing the University’s activities and advised him to proceed cautiously so as not to overburden himself and Management.
Hon. Owusu-Agyemang, also former Minister of Works and Housing and Foreign Affairs, gave the advice at a meeting with a delegation from UESD led by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nyarko-Sampson. He was accompanied by the Registrar, Mrs Mary Abena Agyepong and two other senior members.
Prof. Nyarko-Sampson noted that the purpose of the visit was to inform the former Minister on activities of the University as a regional statesman and to formally invite him to attend its 4th Commencement Lecture as the Guest of honour scheduled for Saturday, 27th January, 2024.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that, there are senior folks in the Region who are interested in learning more about the University but have never visited it. The goal is to bring minds and hands on board to learn about the activities in the Region in order to support the University and when, ‘we were running the names, your name popped up.’
Prof. Nyarko-Sampson briefed the Hon. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, also former Member of Parliament for New Juaben North on the activities of the University since its inauguration on August 5, 2020. He touched on the UESD Act 2015 (989), which established it, as well as the university’s mission, vision, and core values. He also discussed events like the commencement lecture, which is conducted at the start of each academic year, matriculation, the approved statutes of the university, and other events that have occurred there.
The Vice-Chancellor similarly gave an overview of some of the Bachelor of Science Programmes (BSc.) on offer including; BSc. Urban Planning and Development, BSc. Sustainable Construction Management and Technology, BSc. Environment and Public Health, BSc. Aquaculture, BSc. Biological and Mathematical Sciences, BSc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and BSc. Aquaculture Management.
In response, Hon. Owusu Agyemang acknowledged being called upon as a distinguished guest and expressed his happiness at the honour done him and committed himself to accepting the offer to attend the commencement lecture on January 27, 2024. He reaffirmed government’s commitment to offering top-notch university education. The Vice-Chancellor, with the assistance of the Registrar, Mrs Agyepong presented a copy of UESD Five-Year Strategic Plan to the hon Statesman.
The other members of the delegation were; the Heads of the Community Engagement and Project Innovations Unit (CEPIU), Mr. Danial Ofori-Mintah and Head of University Relations, Ms. Barbara Mary Yakubu.
