BSc. Geography and Earth Science

The programme is targeting a number of prospective applicants from various secondary educational levels and post-secondary cohorts with non-degree certificates who meets the admission requirements. Mature students who have basic reading and writing skills, have environmental related experiences. The programme is opened to Ghanaians and foreign nationals who have interest in the programme. The admission requirements for various cohorts are as follow:

  • SSSCE/GBCE

Credit Passes in (A-D) three (3) core English, core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies and any three elective subjects which should include at least one of the following: Economics; Geography; Mathematics; Biology; Chemistry, Physics and General Agriculture with aggregate score of 24 or better.

  • WASSSCE Applicants

At least a credit (A1-C6) in core English, core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies and any three elective subjects which should include at least one of the following: Economics; Geography; Mathematics; Biology; Chemistry Physics; Horticulture, Animal Husbandry and Crop Science with an aggregate score of 36 or better.

 

  • A LEVEL Certificate Applicants

Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Besides, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects (or its equivalent) including English Language, Mathematics and a science subject (for non-science students) and an Arts subject (for science students). A pass in General Paper must also be obtained.

  • HND/Diploma Applicants

HND Second Class (Upper and Lower Division) holders with relevant background may be admitted in Third Year of the programme after passing an interview, while HND First Class may be considered for admission without an interview. Two year Diploma holders may be admitted into second year while three years Diploma with distinction may be admitted into third year of the programme without interview.

  • Mature Applicants

Mature Applicants must have attained the age of 25 years or above with passes in SSSCE/WASSCE/O’Level Mathematics and English and/or relevant working experience, and must also pass a written examination and interview conducted by the School.

  • Foreign Students

Foreign students may be admitted on the basis of qualification from their home country for which the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) shall determine equivalence. Evidence of proficiency in English Language will be required in the case of applicants from non-English speaking countries.

 

Job Prospect

The courses are tailored to offer self-employment to graduates. However, the prospects of acquiring jobs by graduates of the programme are large. Some of the sectors that could employ graduates are:

  • Agriculture;
  • Education and research;
  • Environment, forestry and wildlife management;
  • Hospitality sectors of travel and tourism;
  • Local government/district administration;
  • Resources management;
  • Geological services;
  • Remote sensing and GIS;
  • Mining and manufacturing;
  • Consultancy in:
    • Disaster management;
    • Water and Sanitation – borehole siting and drilling,
    • Capacity building in WASH
    • Petroleum/ oil and gas/ hydrocarbon prospecting;
    • Mineral prospecting;
    • Geospatial analyst (private consultant or in any of the ministries);
  • National development planning commission (rural development, regional development and urban studies);
  • Land use and spatial planning authority  (urban geography and sustainable cities);
  • The various United Nations Systems, Economic Community of West African;
