B.Sc. Biological and Mathematical Sciences

The B.Sc. Biological and Mathematical Sciences programme seeks to attract holders of all secondary and post-secondary education certificates who meet the admission requirements.  Enrollment will be opened to both local and foreign nationals. The admission requirements for the programme are as follows:  

  • SSSCE/GBCE

Credit passes (A-D) in core English, core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies and any three elective subjects from the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Elective Mathematics with aggregate score of 24 or better.

  • WASSCE Applicants

At least a credit (A1-C6) in core English, core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies and any three elective subjects from the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Elective Mathematics with an aggregate score of 36 or better.

  • A LEVEL Certificate Applicants

Applicants should, in addition to credit passes in five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects (including English and Mathematics), have three (3) passes in the relevant subjects at the Advanced Level.  A pass in General Paper must also be obtained.

  • HND/Diploma Applicants

HND holders (Second Class) with relevant background may be admitted in Third Year of the Programme after passing an interview, while HND First Class may be considered for admission without an interview. Two year Diploma holders (Second Class) from accredited tertiary institutions may be admitted into second year while three years Diploma with distinction may be admitted into third year of the Programme without interview.

  • Mature Applicants

Mature Applicants must have attained the age of 25 years or above with passes in SSSCE/WASSCE /‘O’ Level Mathematics and English and/or relevant working experience, and must also pass a written examination and interview conducted by the School.

  • Foreign Students

Foreign students may be admitted on the basis of qualification from their home country for which the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) shall determine equivalence.  Evidence of proficiency in English Language will be required in the case of applicants from non-English speaking countries.

  • The applicant must have qualifications equivalent to WASSCE, SSSCE, or GCE ’A’ Level to be considered for admission or any other nationally recognized standard High School level examinations (for qualifications from countries outside WAEC’s aegis).
  • All foreign qualifications are to be referred to the GTEC for determination of equivalences and eligibility for admission.
  • Applicants should have their results translated into English
  • Applicants should be able to read and write in English.
  • Applicants may also be required to pass an entrance examination and an interview.

 

Job Prospect

All sectors of the economy are potential employers of graduates with B.Sc. Biological and Mathematical Sciences from UESD.  The combined major adequately prepares graduates to pursue either biology or mathematics careers, or work in interdisciplinary areas.  The interactive and experiential science and mathematics training that would be received by students of the programme will enhance their analytical and problem-solving skills.  Thus, the graduates with B.Sc. Biological and Mathematical Sciences from UESD will also be suitable for employment in non-science areas of the economy where they will be productive.
