The susceptibility of mango production to climate change.

Abstract

The susceptibility of mango production to climate change requires the need for the adoption of innovation. However, there is a scarcity of information on the factors driving the uptake of agricultural innovation among plantation farmers in Ghana. This study, guided by the protection motivation and innovation diffusion theories, fills the existing gap by examining the key innovations adopted by mango plantation farmers and the factors influencing the adoption of innovation in the Yilo Krobo Municipality in Ghana. Using a quantitative survey design and random sampling technique, 204 mango plantation farmers were selected and data was collecting with the aid of a questionnaire. Both descriptive and inferential analysis were computed. The results show that mango plantation farmers have adopted process, management and technological innovations on and off their farms. The results also indicate that compared to farmers’ perception of climate change, their adaptive capacity plays an instrument role in the adoption of innovations. Policy implications for improving mango production are discussed.
