The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, has announced that all is set for the University’s first-ever Congregation ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, 23rd November 2024. The event will mark the graduation of UESD’s first batch of students, with the President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, serving as the Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the Morning Show of Rite FM, a community-based radio station in Somanya, about preparations for the historic event, Prof. Nyarko-Sampson commended the University community and stakeholders for their tireless efforts in ensuring the programme’s success.
In the lead-up to the ceremony, Services and Human Resources Divisions of the University, organised a two-day training session for its security personnel. The training focused on protocol services, security measures, traffic management, and crowd control.
The session featured four resource persons: the Somanya Police Commander; Superintendent Kingsley Abrokwa; Chief Inspector Justice Nortey; the Registrar of UESD, Mrs. Mary Abena. Agyapong; Head of Services, Mr. Baffour Osei Akoto; and the Head of Human Resources, Mrs. Rose Nandara Faanu.
Superintendent Abrokwa, who led the training, emphasised the importance of security personnel being familiar with their environment, including both approved and unapproved routes on campus and in staff residences. He also stressed the need to safeguard University property by ensuring that office equipment and electrical plugs are turned off after working hours.
Regarding traffic management, he advised the team to familiarise themselves with designated parking areas to efficiently direct traffic during the event.
Chief Inspector Justice Nortey highlighted the importance of adhering to ethical standards within the security unit. He outlined unacceptable behaviours such as theft, tardiness, indecent dressing, drinking while on duty, negligence, accepting bribes, and disrespecting authority. He encouraged the personnel to exhibit professionalism through punctuality, vigilance, honesty, and courtesy to contribute to the success of the event.
The Registrar, Mrs. Agyapong, also addressed the security personnel, urging them to maintain politeness when managing traffic and crowds. She emphasised the use of courteous language when interacting with visitors, noting that respect is earned through positive conduct.
Mrs.Nandara Faanu delivered a presentation on protocol services and crowd management, equipping the security team with essential skills for handling the congregation ceremony effectively.
