As part of its corporate social responsibility, the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, Eastern Region has extended relief to the residents of Apenawu, a farming community in the Akosombo District, that was impacted by a disaster several months ago. The donations included bags of tissues, clothing, footwear, and personal effects.
A three-member delegation led by the Head of the Administration Division, Mrs. Vivian de-great Aidoo, visited the community to deliver the relief items to those affected.
In her remarks, Mrs. Aidoo expressed gratitude to the people of Apenawu for their warm reception, noting that the donations were a collective effort of UESD staff members. She emphasised that UESD stands with the community in its challenges and is committed to supporting them in every way possible.
She also introduced UESD to the residents, highlighting its vision, mission, and the programmes offered. Adding that UESD is preparing to hold its first graduation on November 23, 2024, and invited the community to join in celebrating this milestone.
One of the leading members of the community, Mr. Francis Amaga, received the donation and expressed appreciation for UESD’s gesture. He conveyed pride in having a distinguished University on their land, bringing accessible education to local residents. Mr. Amaga also highlighted Apenawu’s primary livelihoods in fishing, farming, and gari processing, and shared concerns that frequent rain and dam spillages threaten their resources. Additionally, some residents requested UESD’s support with job opportunities and academic scholarships for Junior and Senior High School graduates in the community.
The other two members of the delegation were the Head of the Services Division, Mr. Baffour Osei Akoto, and the Head of the Community Engagement and Project Innovations Unit (CEPIU), Mr. Daniel Ofori Mintah.
