Some senior members of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), including members of the maiden Congregation Planning Committee, have participated in a training session on planning university ceremonies. The purpose was to equip members with the knowledge and skills needed to organise UESD’s first-ever Congregation, scheduled for November this year. The training was facilitated by Dr. Paul Effah, a retired Registrar, esteemed administrator, and former Executive Secretary of GTEC (formerly NCTE).
The session was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, who emphasised the importance of such gatherings to ensure that members of the University community are well-versed in the protocols and significance of academic ceremonies.
Dr. Effah led the training session by discussing the various types of ceremonies held by universities, such as congregations and matriculations. He explored the historical significance of these ceremonies, explaining their origins and the role they play in marking key milestones in academic life.
The session covered multiple aspects of University ceremonies, including the roles of key University officials such as the Council Chairperson, Vice-Chancellor, and Registrar during events like graduations. Dr. Effah guided participants on the appropriate attire for graduation ceremonies, with a focus on the traditional academic gown, hood, and cap. He noted the distinctions between the attire worn by undergraduates, master’s degree holders, and doctoral candidates, as well as by key university officials and faculty members. Dr. Effah also explained the symbolism behind the shifting of the tassel from one side of the cap to the other during graduation, which signifies the transition from student to graduate.
Additionally, the astute administrator addressed the importance of protocols for managing and organizing graduations. Senior members were informed about various protocols, including the order of proceedings and picture sessions. He shared insights into the meticulous planning required for these events and encouraged participants to actively engage in rehearsals to avoid challenges and ensure a smooth, successful ceremony.
The session concluded with an interactive segment where participants were encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences with university ceremonies. Members of the maiden Matriculation Committee were introduced at the session. The committee has the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah as chairman, and Ms. Justina Aneh, an Assistant Registrar at the Admissions Unit as Secretary. The Registrar, Mrs. Mary Abena Agyepong was also a participant.
