The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) has honoured twenty-six (26) of its students in Levels 200, 300, and 400 for their academic excellence in the 2nd edition of the UESD Deans Excellence Awards. The event took place in the Auditorium, Multi-Purpose Building, and was attended by faculty members, deans, directors, heads of divisions and units, and staff of the University.
Each award winner received a certificate and a cash prize. The scheme, initiated in 2023 by the deans of the School of Sustainable Development (SSD) and the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences (SNES), aims to recognise students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) between 3.80 and 4.00. Out of the 26 students, two of them, Mr. Maxwell Boakye of SSD and Mr. Richard Kwesi Padi of SNES achieved a perfect CGPA of 4.00.
Lecturers and top management members took turns addressing the students. In his address, the Dean of SSD, Prof. Anthony Amoah, reiterated that the purpose of the award scheme is to recognise the efforts of the students amid challenges and their ability to overcome them. It also serves as motivation for students’ hard work exhibited during the academic year. He encouraged other students to work hard and receive awards in the next academic year. Prof. Amoah also announced a new award category, the “Sustainability Scholarship,” which will provide scholarships
to cover tuition fees for brilliant but needy students for the entire four years of their programme at the university.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah, in his remarks, cautioned the awardees to remain humble and continue working hard. He advised them to see the awards as an opportunity to improve and become better versions of themselves.
The Registrar, Mrs Mary Abena Agyepong, remarked that it is unfortunate that mediocrity seems to be gaining prominence in today’s society, overshadowing the celebration of hard work. She emphasised the need to reverse this trend and return to a time when hard work and diligence were valued. She expressed her satisfaction with the award scheme, noting that it aims to achieve precisely that.
The Acting Dean of SNES, Dr. Shine Gbedemah, congratulated the awardees on their achievements while cautioning all students about the need to work hard to maintain desirable CGPAs and avoid possible dismissal from the University for non-performance.
The rest of the award winners were: Mr. Elikplim Ameko, Ms. Portia Teye, Miss. Nana Abena Kyewaa Gyamfi, Mr. Samual Gyekye, Miss. Hannah Aidoo Amponsah, Mr. Frederick Papa Kojo Adu-Acheampong, Mr. Henry Hude, Mr. Joseph Odei Foli, Mrs. Christable Kekeli Acolor, Mr. Charles Kingsley Demah and Mr. Felix Kwetey Akporsuer-from SSD.
