Some faculty members and administrators of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD have attended phase II of a Policy Development Workshop on Open and Distance Learning (ODL) held in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Canada. The three-day workshop which was to draft a UESD ODL policy was held at Ensign Global College, Kpong in the Eastern Region.
The facilitator was Prof. Samuel Amponsah, Dean of the Centre of Distance Education, University of Ghana, Legon.
Phase I of the workshop, held in April 2024 aimed to equip the participants with knowledge and skills to develop an institutional ODL policy that is aligned with UESD’s mission and vision. It also discussed key points to be considered in developing and implementing an ODL policy
In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson expressed optimism that the development of the ODL policy would enhance higher education opportunities for all, contribute to reducing carbon footprint, and provide access to quality education away from the walls of the University. 
Over the course of the three days, the participants, who were divided into seven groups, examined the draft policy’s structure, critically analysed each presentation and ensured that all relevant information was included in the drafts.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wiafe Debrah who closed the workshop commended members for their active participation, insightful contributions, and dedication over the period. He noted that their passion and dedication to furthering the UESD’s ODL policy have been incredibly motivating.
Adding that,’ we have made significant progress in developing a comprehensive framework that aligns with our university’s mission, vision, and commitment to excellence in education. The policy we have developed will serve as a roadmap for enhancing the quality, accessibility, and effectiveness of our ODL programmes.’’ he concluded.
The Facilitator, Prof. Samuel Amposah also expressed gratitude for the cooperation and dedication of participants in completing the draft policy and urged them to contribute to the document’s finalisation for approval.
The Head of the Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Unit (APQA), Dr. Richard Amfo-Otu coordinated the activities of the workshop and outlined the next steps including finalising the implementation plan, proofreading, and editing, consultation with other staff of the University, submission to the University Management and Academic Board for approval before the University Councils approval. He commended the participants for their great work and output.
