Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah has been appointed as the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, (UESD). Prof. Wiafe Debrah, who until his appointment was the Dean of the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, (SNES) holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana; Post Graduate Diploma in Education, University of Cape Coast, Ghana; MSc. in Forest Ecology and Management from the University of Freiburg, Germany, and a Diploma in Natural Resources Management, KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana. Prof. Wiafe Debrah has over two decades of experience in forest and wildlife ecology, management, and conservation.
The new Pro-Vice-Chancellor’s expertise in environmental resources conservation and management spans from the elaboration of management plans, sustainable resource utilization, extension and nursery/zoo management, wildlife management, and forest/wildlife resource inventory. He is also an expert in wildlife conservation, ecology, and management. As a university academic since 2010, Prof. Wiafe Debrah teaches various courses in relation to environmental resources management and conservation. He has over forty(40) research publications in the fields of environmental resources and biodiversity conservation to his credit. Aside from research, Prof. Wiafe has worked as an environmental consultant for some organizations in health, energy, forestry, and mining.
Prof. Wiafe Debrah has contributed as an assessor of species to the red list of threatened species. He has a passion for saving species from extinction, reducing human-wildlife conflicts, and conserving the mountain ecosystem. Prof. Wiafe Debrah has been Ghana’s representative on the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO) Council from 2014 to 2019 and is still an officeholder. He is also a member of a number of organisations including the
Africa Primatological Society (APS), International Primatological Society (IPS), and International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF).
He has attended and done a lot of oral presentations at conferences. He is a board member of Wet African Primates Conservation Action (WAPCA); Rare Disease Initiative-Ghana; Breast Care International. His hobbies are traveling to places of the ‘wild’ and bird watching.
